I am always pleased by Cowboy Studio's products. Everything I have received from them so far has been of outstanding quality and fit for its intended duty. The C-stand is fantastic and holds my S4 light with safety and security. With this stand I can move about my studio without a worry to this stand falling over or not performing as I need.

I bought the Cowboy Studio 40-inch c-stand with grip kit ; extension arm for light-duty use in our studio set-up. We were planning on getting two more if this one worked out, however it comes across as a reverse-engineered Avenger stand minus the build quality, durability, and usability. So... a poorly reverse-engineered Avenger stand.
I'll be honest, I was looking to save the extra $30-40 by going with the Cowboy kit, but it looks like you get what you pay for. My first disappointment was that the kit does not come with two grip heads (as pictured), only one. We wanted to use the stand for an immediate shoot, so this was an inconvenience and an extra cost. The next (and more disturbing) issue came after trying out the various tension points ; joints. They don't have the fit ; finish of a Matthews/Avenger stand.. clamps start to flex when tightened, and nothing moves smoothly. There's even a small piece about the 3/4 the size of a little finger that sits loose inside one of the tube clamps, which is absurd. It acts as a sort of shim so the screw clamping the pipe isn't just a bare screw pressing against the pipe.. it distributes the pressure. But the piece is always falling out if you release the tension far enough.. maddening, and just asking for problems. On top of that, it seems like 'over-tightening' the tension points will lead to some serious wear ; tear, loosening ; straining the joints. And when I say over-tightening, I don't mean cranking them needlessly... just that extra twist you feel like giving a c-stand clamp when it's holding up whatever fragile equipment you're trusting it with.
Now all that said, I still use the stand.. but only as a sort of "fixed stand" that holds one lightweight, low-cost light needing minimal adjustment (hence the 2 stars as opposed to 1). It's functional in the most basic sense of the word, but unless you're using it as just described (with minimal adjustment, in almost a fixed setting), spring for the Avenger stand. I mentioned at the start of this review that I needed another two c-stands after this one. I bought an Avenger and a Matthews.. both are great, head ; shoulders above the Cowboy stand. Set them, tweak them, move them... sturdy pieces of equipment that you don't have to worry about. If I end up buying another one -- or another five -- I'd go with Avenger. Built like a tank and handles like a sports car. I can't believe I'm describing a c-stand this way, but the difference is just that extreme... so much easier to use, no more fear of product malfunction. The piece of mind alone is worth the extra cost.
